To mark the Centenary of the ending of the First World War, the UK’s main Veterans housing charity, Haig Housing, is calling for 100 Veterans to walk from Menin Gate in Ypres to the Cenotaph in Whitehall.
The Long Walk Home will be timed to arrive for Remembrance Sunday And Armistice Day on 11 November 2018. The walk will cover 100 miles over a four day period, 25 miles from Ypres to the Belgian Coast and then another 75 miles from above Dover to Central London. Walkers must be sufficiently fit to take part in the walk in possibly unpleasant weather.
In a ‘Call to Arms’ Haig Housing is also appealing for hosts to accommodate the walkers in pairs during the three day journey through Kent, along with specialist and generalist volunteers to assist with a show of ‘Dunkirk spirit’.
Veterans that take part will be joined along the way by members of the public, politicians and celebrities to raise awareness of the centenary and raise funds for the charity.
Walkers are also being asked to fundraise towards £1000 with an ideal target of £1918. Sponsors are being recruited to help with at least £500 of this per walker as well as assisting with other costs.
Haig Housing will co-ordinate all other support and logistical requirements in support of the Walk including accommodation, food, transport and equipment.
